Greetings, SF Supporters,
Things have been very busy indeed, hence the absence of the August update. It has been a period of highs and lows. Let us start with the lows, and end with the highs, shall we?
Most of you have already heard the shocking news that beloved long-time player and assistant coach of SF Stompers FC, Shane Kilby, died a week ago as the result of a tragic accident. He was but 26 years old. Please see this link for a touching tribute to Shane May his memory be eternal. Those of you who have not already extended your condolences to his friends and family may do so here if you wish.
In contrast to the preceding distressing news, I have the great pride and honor of reporting to you all the great success that was the Street Soccer USA National Cup tournament, held on the weekend of 15-17 August at Civic Center Plaza. I especially want to single out Jacques Pelham, Sathya Sundaram, Jr Andrade, Casey Proud, Jamie Hiteshew, Kris Chiles, and Jacob Talarman, who represented the Association in the SSUSA Open Cup. The Red and Gold made an excellent run to the quarterfinals in their tournament debut. Words fail to express the pride I have in these gentlemen, and I know that next year, we'll fly even higher. Most important of all, we raised over $600.00 to help the programs supported by Street Soccer.
I also want to extend a special thanks to SFFSA member Mike Malaret, who was instrumental in getting our team practice opportunities at the Margaret Hayward park court, and who tirelessly supported the team throughout the tournament, all the while working to make the tournament as whole a great success, and playing in it himself for Street Soccer San Francisco.
I wish that more members had come out to the tournament, because it was a great event. More than anything else, I will cherish meeting and making friends with so many great people there. Next time, I want everyone at the event. No excuses! :-)
Next up, I am happy to announce that San Francisco City FC has officially kicked off its membership drive. Here is our chance to have a supporter controlled team, embedded in the community. The club represents a real opportunity to do something that has not been done here before, and we all should be pretty excited to have a chance to be part of it, right from the beginning. Fifty dollars gets you an annual membership, with season tickets, a scarf, and most importantly, the right to vote on club decisions, vote for the board of directors of the club, and to run for a spot on the board of directors yourself. For more information, check out the club's website here: www.sfcityfc.com. Or, you can visit them on Facebook or email them at membersh[email protected]
Light The Night Walk With the Austen Everett Foundation
23 September 2014
The SFFSA and the AEF have teamed up to participate in the 2014 San Francisco Light The Night Walk, and we need people to volunteer to join the team, and also to contribute to the cause themselves. Please see the link here for more information
Light The Night Walk is a fundraising campaign of the The Leukemia & Lymphoma Sociaty (LLS) which brings together families and communities to honor blood cancer survivors, as well as those lost to the diseases, and shine a light on the importance of finding cures and providing access to treatments for blood cancer patients.
The Austen Everett Foundation works to inspire, empower, and improve the lives of children faced with cancer by matching and integrating these special individuals with professional and intercollegiate athletic organizations.
